Safety Instrumented Engineer
The Safety Instrument Systems Engineer is an advocate of the safety systems and safety instrument asset base for the Refinery. Cross-functional advocate for best practices in the selection, implementation, and maintenance of the instrumented protective system asset base (hardware and software) to ensure that safety, regulatory, production, and optimization objectives are met. This instrumented protective system asset base includes all safety system instrumentation, measurement, safety manager hardware, safety manager programming, and regulatory safety system function tests. Essential Functions of this role include:
– System Administration/Maintenance
– Provide engineering services to troubleshoot, analyze, design, and provide direction to safely resolve instrument related safety system problems within the refinery.
– Investigate and verify “First Outs” or root causes on instrumented protective system trips.
– Responsible for the development, implementation and coordination of safety shutdown system reliability improvement efforts, processes, and proof/function testing.
– Responsible for Instrument Mechanical Integrity (MI) regulatory compliance for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) for SIS life cycle management and SIL verification calculations and documentation.
– Responsible for adopting and sharing safety system “best practices” through internal and external networking. Networks/Teams Include: Field Instrument Network (FIN) and SPI (INtools) Network.
– Assist the maintenance work process to provide technical guidance and documentation based on priority safety system work.
– Participate in, and provide support for, PHA and LOPA processes.
– Assist in the design of protection layers of safety instrumented functions that do not meet the desired SIL target defined in the PHA.
– Assist in the development of instrumented protective system test for turnaround work lists. Responsible for maintaining, updating, and creating SRS documentation for the entire site. Responsible for the development, implementation and management of instrument safe work practices, maintenance procedures, testing procedures, preventive maintenance plans and engineering standards and specifications.
– Perform fault tree analysis on safety instrumented functions that cannot be modeled in SIL Solver.
– Complete/Assist MOCs related to Instruments and shutdown systems.
– Lead or participate in root cause analysis of instrument and shutdown system equipment failures. Perform audits and inspections on instrument shutdown systems, this includes IPL verification audits. Conduct stage 1 through 5 FSAs.
– Review and approve SIL calculations from projects and on major instrumented protection systems test. Provide input and assistance to small and large capital projects from conception to commissioning for instrumented shutdown system design and analysis.
